Calculate voltage drop for single-phase or three-phase circuits and find the cable size that keeps it within safe limits for your load and run length.

Current ratings are IEC 60364-5-52 reference method C (clipped direct, 30 °C ambient) values for PVC-insulated cable. Grouping, ambient temperature, burial and installation method change the rating – apply correction factors for your installation.

Frequently asked questions

What is an acceptable voltage drop?

A common design target is 3% for lighting and 5% for other loads, measured from the supply point to the furthest equipment. Long feeders are often designed for 2-3% so the final circuits still have margin.

Why does a longer cable need a bigger size?

Voltage drop grows with length and current. Doubling the length doubles the drop, so long runs need a larger cross-section even when the current rating of a smaller cable would be enough.

Copper or aluminium cable – which should I choose?

Aluminium is lighter and cheaper but has about 1.6 times the resistance of copper, so you need a larger size for the same current and drop. Copper is smaller, more flexible and easier to terminate.

Does XLPE insulation change the cable size?

XLPE runs safely at 90 °C instead of 70 °C for PVC, so the same size carries more current. Voltage drop is slightly higher at the hotter operating temperature.
