Frequently asked questions

How many kW solar system do I need for my house?

Divide your yearly units by about 1,480 (5.2 sun hours × 365 days × 0.78 performance). A home using 500 units a month (6,000 a year) needs roughly 4 to 5 kW. The calculator rounds up to whole panels.

What is the difference between net metering and net billing?

Under net metering, units you export offset units you import at the same rate. Under net billing, imported units are charged at the full tariff while exported units are paid at a lower buyback rate, so using solar power during the day is worth much more than exporting it.

How long does a solar system take to pay back?

It depends on your tariff, how much of the power you use during the day and the system price. With this calculator's default figures (Rs 60 per unit, net billing, 40% daytime use, Rs 110,000 per kW) a home using 500 units a month pays back in about 2.5 years. Enter your own numbers above.

How much roof space does solar need?

A modern 550-600 W panel takes about 2.6 m² (around 28 sq ft) including spacing. A 5 kW system needs roughly 22-24 m² (240-260 sq ft) of shade-free roof.

Which DC cable should I use for my solar system?

Most home systems use 4 mm² or 6 mm² tinned copper solar DC cable between panels and inverter. Use our solar DC cable calculator to find the right size for your cable length.
