Results are engineering estimates based on IEC 62548 practice (1.25 × Isc) and typical cable data. Ambient temperature, bundling and conduit can reduce current rating. Final selection should be confirmed by a qualified installer.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use 4 mm² or 6 mm² DC cable for solar panels?

For a single string with a short run (roughly under 15 m), 4 mm² usually keeps losses low. For longer runs, higher-current panels or two strings combined on one cable, 6 mm² or larger keeps voltage drop under 1-2% and the saved energy pays back the extra cost. Enter your panel details above to see the exact figure.

Why does the calculator use 1.25 × Isc?

On bright, cool days with reflection a panel can produce more than its rated short-circuit current. Standards such as IEC 62548 size DC cables for at least 1.25 times the panel Isc so the cable never runs above its rating.

What voltage drop is acceptable in solar DC cables?

Aim for 1-2%. Every percent lost in the cable is energy your panels produced but you never use. Around 3% is generally the upper limit.

Why use separate red and black cables?

Red for positive and black for negative makes installation, testing and later maintenance safer and helps prevent reverse-polarity mistakes at the inverter.

Can I use normal house wire for solar panels?

No. Solar DC cable uses tinned copper strands and UV- and weather-resistant insulation rated for high DC voltage. Ordinary PVC house wire cracks in rooftop sun and is not rated for string voltages.
